Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such medications should be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to original weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
