The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's decision was the chance of his move to foreign missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President Donald Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, many his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.

The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
