Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the right to question particular decisions from the chair umpire, following the practice already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
